- Swedish driver set for Free Practice 1 outing on Friday
- F2 racer in for hectic weekend in Spain
Dino Beganovic will make his first Formula 1 free practice appearance of the year this weekend, driving for Ferrari in FP1 at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
Beganovic is set to slot into Lewis Hamilton’s SF-26 in the opening F1 practice session on Friday, running alongside Charles Leclerc.
The opportunity comes after Beganovic previously appeared in two FP1 outings for the Scuderia last year in Bahrain and Austria. The 22-year-old Swede also drove for the team at the end-of-year F1 Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi.
“I’m thrilled to be driving for Ferrari in FP1 this weekend, trying out the SF-26 and the new Formula 1 regulations for the first time,” says Dino Beganovic. “It’s a great privilege and I intend to make the most of this opportunity to assist the team in its weekend programme. It is always something very special to step into the F1 car, especially in an official session on a Grand Prix weekend.
“I feel very lucky and grateful.”
Friday’s Formula 1 outing will add to a busy schedule for Beganovic this weekend at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Round 5 of the FIA Formula 2 Championship also set to play out at the Spanish event.
Friday in particular will mark a hectic challenge for Beganovic, who is slated to make his Formula 1 FP1 appearance in between F2 practice and qualifying.
The DAMS Lucas Oil racer is feeling up for the task ahead, however, as he looks to build on a podium finish last Sunday on the streets of Monaco.
“It will be busy on Friday, but I have experience of that from last year and I feel perfectly ready for it,” says Dino Beganovic. “We’ve got some good momentum now in F2. Not just the podium last weekend in Monaco, but the entire season; we’ve been there fighting for the podium in every feature race, every Sunday.
“Barcelona is a key event in many ways, because it’s the return to a more normal type of track after all the opening rounds were essentially street circuits. Hopefully we can have another good one.”
Like always in Formula 2, this weekend’s pair of races will take place on Saturday (sprint race – 26 laps) and Sunday (feature race – 37 laps).
