– Swede out to defend championship lead
– Season reaches halfway point at popular Dutch seaside track
Dino Beganovic will be out to consolidate his Formula Regional European Championship lead as the single-seater series hits half time this weekend at Zandvoort.
Beganovic has been the leading star so far in the 2022 season, never finishing worse than second in any of the first eight races of the campaign and winning three times.
However, following the latest round at Paul Ricard two weeks ago, Beganovic was subsequently disqualified from the results of Race 2 due to an alleged technical irregularity. Prema Powerteam have appealed the decision, and a final outcome in the matter remains pending.
While the disqualification has dented Beganovic’s championship lead – at least temporarily (the points can be reinstated in case the appeal is upheld) – the Ferrari Driver Academy youngster remains firmly in charge heading to Zandvoort and is not bothered by the most recent developments.
“I feel as good as ever,” says Dino Beganovic. “We’ve had a small break since Paul Ricard, and I’ve spent it away on a training camp with Ferrari. I’m really looking forward to Zandvoort this weekend. It’s a great circuit; proper old-school, very fast, with no room for mistakes.
“Qualifying will be crucial as it’s very hard to overtake, so that will be half the job done this weekend. Hopefully we can continue to do well and close out the first half of the season in a positive way.”
Testing begins at the Dutch seaside venue, located on the North Sea shores just outside Amsterdam, on Thursday. Friday features a pair of official practice sessions, while the two qualifying sessions and races play out, as usual, across Saturday and Sunday.
