– Formula Regional European Championship sets camp at Imola
– Ferrari Driver Academy racer out to defend championship lead at “home” event
After storming to the top of the championship table with a winning performance in the opening round of the season, Dino Beganovic returns to Formula Regional European Championship action this weekend at Imola looking to pick up where he left off.
Beganovic enjoyed a resounding season-opener two weeks ago at Monza, winning the first race of the new campaign from pole position and taking a P2 finish in the weekend-concluding Race 2 as he made an immediate mark on the 37-car grid.
That performance inevitably established the Prema Powerteam youngster at the peak of the early championship standings, with Beganovic leading by 15 points heading into round two of the season – which sees the field remain in Italy as the high-speed straights of Monza give way for the undulating twists and turns of Imola.
Officially named the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, Imola is a place of extra significance for Beganovic, who scored both his first single-seater pole and victory at the track in Italian F4 two years ago and continues to enjoy the support of the Ferrari Driver Academy.
“We had a strong first round at Monza, and I can’t wait to get back in the car this weekend in Imola,” says Dino Beganovic. “We’re leading the championship and Imola has always been a good track for us, both in F4 and with the pace we had there last year in FRECA. We just need to keep our heads cool, try to score as many points as possible, and take advantage of the package we usually have around here.”
This weekend’s Formula Regional European Championship event gets underway with a brace of free practice sessions on Friday, followed in the traditional manner by a pair of qualifying sessions and races across Saturday and Sunday.
