– Italian delight: Swede completes emotional Monza/Imola victory double
Dino Beganovic extended his lead at the top of the Formula Regional European Championship standings with another resounding performance in round two of the season at Imola, clinching his second victory of the season and maintaining a 100 % podium rate so far in 2022.
The Ferrari Driver Academy member, racing on historic soil for the Scuderia at Imola’s Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, took victory in the first race of the double-header weekend and wrapped up proceedings with P2 in the concluding second race on Sunday.
The outcome identically matches that of the opening round at Monza two weeks ago, remarkably netting Beganovic two wins and two second places from the first four races of the campaign.
“It’s just incredible, such a great start to the season,” says Dino Beganovic. “To go away from these two weekends in Italy with two wins and two second places, never outside the podium, really is more than we could have expected. It’s great to have done so well in this country, the home of Ferrari and Prema, and the car has been just exceptional. Grazie mille, everyone on the team!”
Beganovic was on rapid form again in Imola, qualifying third for both races and overtaking rivals for P2 in both events. In Race 1, the Swede took the flag second on the road, but was promoted to victory when ART Grand Prix’s Gabriele Minì was handed a penalty for a jump start.
In Race 2, Beganovic survived a mid-race downpour, red flag and restart to come home a close second. As the top points scorer for the second consecutive meeting, Beganovic now leads the championship by 39 points.
The Formula Regional European Championship resumes on the streets of Monte Carlo on the last weekend of May, holding a prestigious slot on the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix support bill.
